Journalists Assaulted by Police During Protest Coverage

Hyderabad, July 11, 2024: In a disturbing turn of events, three journalists were assaulted by police officers while covering protests against the state government's handling of Group 1, 2, and 3 exams on July 10th. The protest, primarily led by students, turned chaotic as police not only targeted the demonstrators but also attacked media personnel. Journalists had their identification cards confiscated, and their equipment was damaged in the process. "This is a blatant attack on press freedom," said Mir Qurram Ali, President of the Telangana Journalists and repoters Association. "We demand immediate action to protect journalists and hold the responsible officers accountable." The Telangana Journalists Association has submitted a formal complaint to the Press Council of India, supported by compelling video evidence. They urge the council to intervene promptly to ensure the safety and security of media professionals in the region.
